My Dearest Cousin Maren

I forget that I have a blog.  I needed to get my feelings out, and this was a good outlet for me.  My closest cousin passed away last month, and I'm still in shock.  I want to call her and hear her voice one last time.  I want to hug her and hold her as tight as I can.

My very first memories of you were when your mother was pregnant with you; I had to be about 4. She was the first pregnant lady I had ever been around and I remember being very excited that a little baby was coming. Once, Aunt Julie said she was going to go into her room to change and I was so upset because I thought if she changed her shirt that you would fall out and get hurt. Then when she came back into the room after changing I was so amazed to find you were still in there, still safe and sound.
You were a huge part of the greatest summer of my life, the summer of 92, when we spent over a month at Grandma's house in Missouri. We were two California girls in the country, experiencing the life our mothers had grown up in. We explored the acres of land; we found a dried creek in the middle of the little forest and made forts, or, at least it seemed like a forest to us. We loved putting coins on the rail road tracks to see if we could get a perfectly flatten coin, but then we stopped out of fear that we would derail a train. I remember the cows were so sweet and we made friends with a few of them. I'll never forget the day when two mother cows thought we were too close to their baby calves and they started charging at us and I had to hop over a barbed wire fence and pick you up to throw you over. I don't think I'd ever ran or acted so fast in my life. After that I vowed to never eat a cow again, and I never did.
During the days we would swim in creeks, lakes, and go to the little town's public pool. Our cousin's Jessica and Jarron would come to hang out with us too. One of the games we would play was tag on top of huge rolled hay stacks; our rule was that if you would fall then that meant you would get bit by a snake, yikes! Our nights were filled with bon fires, smores and trying to catch lightning bugs.
I felt like that was my last summer as a kid. Even as we grew up we always remained close throughout the years. I watched you grow into a beautiful women. Even though there was a five year difference between us I always felt like we were the same age. You were always very mature and wise beyond your years. I always admired how strong you were, and how you were never afraid to speak your mind. We would laugh, and laugh for hours. There are so many inside jokes that we shared, and I'm sad we will never laugh at them again. I'll still always remember them, though.
What hurts me the most, and makes my heart ache, is knowing that you and Grandma are gone. When she was passing it was a very emotional time for our family, even though the family tried to be strong and repress it. You and I had one another to grieve and cry with. She had been a big part of our lives, and I can still remember how you could do the best impersonation of her raspy voice.
The last time we saw Grandma, when she was on her death bed, we both knew we would never see her again. We got in bed with her and stroked her arms and hair. We told her how much we loved her and how important she had been to us. She couldn't open her eyes or talk, but I know she heard everything. Both of you are gone now, and I can't breath when I think about it.
I wish I could talk to you one last time. I wish I knew the last time we talked on the phone would be our last. I wish I could hear your voice. I can still hear it loud and clear, and hear your laugh. I can still remember your voice from when you were a little kid. There are so many memories that we could have shared, it's not fair to you or us. I wish I could have helped you, my little Mare Bear. I wish I could have taken the pain away from you. My dearest cousin, Maren, I will always hold a special place for you in my heart, and never forget our precious memories. I love you, so much. Until we meet again....

Orange Themed Baby Shower

I had been dreaming of planning my b.f.f.'s baby shower for years, so when the day finally arrived that she was having my baby, naturally the baby shower planning began! When discussing themes, D had a great idea to do an "orange theme", since it was her favorite color and it would work for a boy or a girl. It was so much fun to plan and to make everything. If I had thousands of dollars to put into a party I would, but I don't. I honestly never spend more than $300 on a party and that's including the food, decorations, party favors, venue, and the whole enchilada.

I had this old frame in my garage that I had bought from a yard sale for .50, knowing that one day it would come into good use.  I spray painted it orange and the backing is scrapbook paper.  I got the free script printables from goodol' Martha Stewart, used my circle cutter and some vintage ribbon that I bought at a thrift store seriously 7 or 8 years ago (I know, I'm sick but hey I knew I would need it one day, so I never did away with it).  I spray painted my old cake stand too.

I bought a pack of white doilies for $2 and spray painted them orange.  My other b.f.f. has an endless supply of oranges thanks to her neighbor's huge orange tree that hangs over into her yard, so those were free.  All we did was slice oranges, they helped hold the flowers up, give it color, and everything smelled so fresh and zesty.  For the flowers we just bought a few fresh bouquets of Gerber Daisys from Trader Joes.

I bought a few Dollar Store frames, spray painted them orange, and had pictures of the mommy-to-be, pictures of the happy couple, and sonogram pictures framed.

It was a big hit, and everyone had so much fun.  I cannot wait until I can plan someone else's baby shower!

Elijah's 5th Lego Birthday Party!

My son is OBESSED with Legos.  He talks about them all day, plays with them, and dreams about them, so naturally we had to have a Lego birthday party for him.  There are a million things you can do for a Lego party.  This was the easiest most inexpensive party I have planned by far.  We had his party on New Years Eve which is his actual birthday, and we kept it really simple, the kids and adults had a blast!
I printed out Lego man faces and used clear packing tape to cover and seal them onto the bubbles.
I thought it would be alot easier.  It took forever to frost it.  It's a 9" by 13" baked chocolate cake, and 8 vanilla cupcakes.  After it cooled I put the cake upside down and trimmed it to make it more flat.  I cut the cupcake tops off and stuck each one onto the cake with some cream cheese frosting that I made as blue as it could get.
My sister made these cupcakes using dots as the lego bumps ( I don't know what else to call them).  I constructed the Lego cupcake tower, which was super easy and fun to make.

Gracie's Ice Cream Birthday Party!

The day finally arrived for Gracie's ice cream birthday party.  The weather started out foggy and cold,  but then the sky cleared, the sun came out and it turned out to be a gorgeous day (minus the wind).  Family and friends came from all over California, and it made our family feel very special and loved that everyone came out to share Gracie's special day with us.
I LOVE planning my kid's birthday parties, and I think it comes from all the parties that I dreamed of having when I was a child.  What kid or adult doesn't like ice cream?  We had an ice cream bar and my sister made ice cream cupcakes and I created the ice cream cupcake tower.

My Baby Girl Turned Two Today

I still can't get over the fact that my one and only baby girl is two years old today.  I never pictured myself with a daughter, for some reason I always wanted three boys.  God knew what he was doing when he gave me my precious little angel, because now I can't even imagine not having a daughter in my life!  I like to make a huge deal out of my kid's birthdays and I have started a tradition where the family sings happy birthday first thing in the morning while they are still in bed.  Then they get to open some of their presents, and I make their favorite breakfast, and the rest of the day is devoted to whatever they want to do.

Slow Your Roll

This past week I was so sick with whatever my kids and husband had passed on to me.  I was hit with it 10 times harder than the rest of my family, and there were a few days where I could not even get out of bed for more than a few minutes at a time.  I don't know what I would have done without my husband and my parents help.  I think it hit me so much harder because I was so run down. Having so much time to actually lay down and rest, really made me reanalyze how I have been living my life lately.  The main conclusion I came up with is that I need to SLOW down a bit.  I need to be ok with the house not being spotless every minute of the day, and to not freak out because the laundry baskets are almost filled to the top.  Today I did not clean my house from top to bottom like I wanted to, and I still have two loads of laundry to fold, but I did take a long nap, and I snuggled on the couch to watch a movie with my kids.  I have to say it was a good day!

I even took my daughter to school for part of the day with her older brother so I could get a break at least from two kids for a few hours.  She felt like such a big girl, and when we pulled up to the school this morning, she yelled, "yay, my school!"

Couponing Is So Much Fun!

I have only been on the coupon bandwagon going on 8 weeks now, and I cannot even fathom what in the world I was waiting for!  I think I had the usual misconceptions or excuses; "I don't use that stuff, it's all for crap, you're getting stuff you don't need just because it's a good deal, and I don't have all those hours to devote to it."  I have to say I didn't understand how it really worked, and when a few people tried to explain how they did it throughout the years my brain could not absorb anything that they were saying about the topic.  Fast forward to having 3 kids and with the cost of living sky rocketing, and with more money sense, all signs started pointing to trying everything I could to save a dollar.  If that meant that I only had one coupon for $1.50 off diapers, well then that's a $1.50 more in my pocket!  There are coupons for everything you can think of and it is really quite simple....you look at the store ads and see what's on sale and you match those items with coupons.  I used to go to the store and spend over a hundred dollars and when I got home to put it all away, I would feel like I still didn't have alot of food, and now with couponing I can walk out of the store with shopping cart full of groceries for under $70!  This was from my shopping adventure at Ralph's last week.

Ralphs: OOP $65.48 This includes: 6 pack of boneless chicken breasts, 2 packages of ground turkey, 3 Ben & Jerry's Ice Creams, 3 Coffee House Inspiration Creamers, Tully's Coffee, 8 Juicy Juices, 2-24ct Eggo Waffles, 10 Yoplait Yogurts, and everything else!

CVS, is my new favorite place to shop at.  I used to never shop there because of all the high prices, but I had no idea of the deals I was missing out on! Every week they have selected products that if you purchase they will in return give you, Extra Care Bucks (ECB), money that you can use for a future purchase.  It's a crazy, fun game to me.  You can walk in with $12 bucks in your pocket and walk out with tons of products!  Here's what I got last night.

All this was for $11.36, and I still have $10 in Extra Care Bucks to use on my next purchase!

I had been holding on to my Twizzlers coupons forever waiting for a good deal because I am planning on having a candy buffet for one of the parties that I am planning.  I always check the clearance section of every store I go into because that is where you can find some killer deals.  The Twizzlers were on sale for .69 each and with my coupons it made them .19 each!  The Hershey's Bliss were free because they gave you $5.99 in ECB's just for buying them, the Hawaiian Tropics Lip Balms made me $4, the Colgate's were .04 each.....and now you see how this can be addicting!
